Op deze broeierige avond in juni was Rien Vroegindeweij gevraagd de expositie van Hans in te leiden:
Ik was enigszins verbaasd, dames en heren, toen Hans Verweij mij vroeg deze tentoonstelling te openen. In de loop der jaren heb ik aardig wat tentoonstellingen van Hans meegemaakt, maar ik kan mij niet herinneren dat er ooit een met een toespraak geopend werd, althans niet vrijwillig, zeker niet met zijn instemming. Sterker nog, ik ken Hans lang en goed genoeg om te weten dat hij niet van toespraken houdt. Vooral wanneer de bar tot het laatste woord gesloten blijft. Maar vanavond hebben we het geluk dat we in een café zitten, en het is warm, dus ik zal het kort houden.
Wat moet je, als opener, over Hans Verweij zeggen. Zelf is hij een man van weinig woorden, tenminste wat kunst en in het bijzonder zijn eigen kunst betreft. Aan de andere kant ken ik hem als een groot en scherpzinnig lezer van goede boeken. We hebben het er samen vaak over. Maar ik kan natuurlijk Vaandrager citeren die hem in De Hef beschreef als de intelligente painter.
Of Bob den Uyl. In de verhalenbundel ‘Een zwervend bestaan’ uit 1977 vraagt Bob den Uyl zich af waarom mensen die koortsachtig kunsttentoonstellingen aflopen, niet met dezelfde opwinding jaarbeurzen of tentoonstellingen van industriële producten bezoeken. Ik citeer: “In dit verband kan het nuttig zijn te wijzen op de woorden waarmee de eminente kunstenaar J.C. Verweij zijn reputatie in één klap vestigde, namelijk: “Kunst is namaak”.
“Deze verpletterende uitspraak,”gaat Den Uyl verder, “kwam weer in mijn gedachten toen ik onlangs de ‘Horecava bezocht, een beurs waarop, zoals de naam al doet vermoeden, alle nieuwe ontwikkelingen op het horecagebeid werden getoond. Hier trof ik een krokettenmachine aan van zo’n zes meter lengte, waarin aan de ene zijde alle ingrediënten konden worden gegooid en de volledige kroketten er na enige tijd aan de andere zijde uitrolden, gereed voor de frituurpan. Naar zoiets kan ik urenlang gespannen blijven kijken, en bij echte kunstwerken overkomt me dat niet vaak.” Einde citaat.
Bob en Hans waren vrienden en ik weet dat Hans vaak voor Bob een soort aangever van komische of absurde situaties was, die Bob vervolgens opschreef. Dus het is maar de vraag wie zo lang naar die krokettenmachine heeft staan kijken.
Had Bob den Uyl het nog mee mogen maken dat zijn eminente vriend in de kleinste galerie van Rotterdam, zo niet van Nederland, exposeerde, zou hij dat met een zekere hilariteit in een verhaal hebben verwerkt.
Als kunst namaak is, dan kunnen we ons afvragen wat in het werk van Hans Verweij precies wordt nagemaakt. Ik zal me vanavond aan dat vraagstuk niet wagen, maar u kunt het zelf proberen aan de hand van het ene werk dat hier aanschouwelijk wordt geëxposeerd. Daarom verklaar ik deze expositie voor geopend.
Uiteindelijk heeft Rien deze toespraak niet gehouden... op aangeven van Hans.
